On Tuesday a division bench of the Bombay High Court comprising Acting Chief Justice Ravindra Ghuge and Justice Gautam Ankhad heard submissions concerning the persistent waterlogging of roads in Mumbai during the recent spell of relentless rains. The bench noted that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has been subjected to criticism on various social media platforms for the inundation of streets and low‑lying areas. In its observations the court described the situation as one in which the city is ‘destined’ to witness rainwater on the roads because citizens have ‘robbed their own motherland’ by undertaking unauthorised encroachments on land and by clogging the drainage system with solid waste and debris.
