Assam Election Results 2026 LIVE: BJP-Led NDA Crosses Majority Mark

The political landscape of Assam remains firmly in the hands of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) as the 2026 Assembly election results confirm a sweeping victory for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). As of the final rounds of counting on Monday evening, the BJP-led coalition has surged past the simple majority mark of 64 in the 126-member House. This victory marks a historic "hat-trick" for the saffron party in the gateway to Northeast India, cementing Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's position as a dominant regional force.

In a personal triumph, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has maintained his invincible record in the Jalukbari constituency, leading by a massive margin of over 63,000 votes. Sarma’s campaign, which focused heavily on infrastructure development and the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), appears to have resonated deeply with the electorate, providing the NDA with a commanding lead in approximately 80 to 100 seats across the state.

The opposition, led by the Congress-steered Asom Sonmilito Morcha (ASM), faced a significant setback. One of the biggest upsets of the day occurred in the high-profile Jorhat constituency, where senior Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi lost to the BJP's Hitendra Nath Goswami by a decisive margin of over 23,000 votes. This loss in a traditional Congress stronghold symbolizes the broader struggle of the opposition to counter the BJP's organizational machinery and the popularity of the incumbent leadership.

Other key results from the day include:

    1. Ajanta Neog (Finance Minister): Retained the Golaghat seat for a record sixth consecutive term, defeating her Congress rival by over 43,000 votes.
    2. Atul Bora (Agriculture Minister): The AGP chief successfully defended his Bokakhat constituency.
    3. Mrinal Saikia: Registered a massive victory in Khumtai with a margin exceeding 91,000 votes.

The BJP's regional allies, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the United People's Party Liberal (UPPL), also showed a steady performance, particularly in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR). Meanwhile, the Bodoland People's Front (BPF), which contested independently, managed to lead in about 10 seats, indicating a shift in the local power dynamics within the tribal belts.

The 2026 mandate is being viewed as an endorsement of the state's recent delimitation exercise and the government's focus on "Assamese Identity" alongside national development goals. With a record voter turnout of 85.96%, the highest in recent history, the people of Assam have delivered a clear and stable mandate. In Guwahati, the atmosphere is celebratory as BJP workers have already begun victory processions, marking the beginning of another five-year term focused on the "Act East" policy.

As the final tallies are uploaded to the ECI portal, the focus now shifts to the formation of the new cabinet. With the "Sarma Juggernaut" proving its resilience once again, the 2026 results set a clear trajectory for the state’s political and administrative future, far outpacing the comeback hopes of the Congress-led alliance.

This video provides a deep dive into the key factors that led to the BJP's dominant performance in the 2026 Assam polls, including a breakdown of the major seat-wise swings.
