In a significant development within the decade-long legal battle involving Indian cricketing legend Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the Madras High Court has issued a fresh directive regarding the costs of evidence processing. Justice RN Manjula has ordered the former Indian captain to deposit a sum of ₹10 lakh to cover the expenses for translating and transcribing Hindi video evidence into English.

This order comes as part of the ₹100 crore defamation suit filed by MS Dhoni in 2014 against several media houses and a senior police official following allegations linking him to the 2013 Indian Premier League (IPL) betting and spot-fixing scandal.

The High Court’s decision centers on the logistical challenge of processing digital evidence. The evidence in question consists of several CDs containing news clippings, debates, and broadcasts—primarily in Hindi—that were aired at the height of the IPL controversy.

To ensure the court can effectively evaluate these recordings during the trial, they must be translated into the court’s official language and transcribed accurately. Justice RN Manjula observed that this is no small feat. The court noted that the task is "humongous" and would likely require the full-time services of a dedicated Interpreter and a Typist for a period of three to four months.

Setting the cost at ₹10 lakh, the court clarified that in a civil suit, the burden of preparing the evidence and presenting it in a format the court can use lies with the person who filed the case (the plaintiff).

"In normal circumstances and in a suit filed by the plaintiff, it is the plaintiff who has to do the above work and file the documents along with his plaint," the Court stated. Given the specialized nature of the task and the need for an official court interpreter, the bench ruled it "obligatory" for Dhoni to bear the expenses.

The legal saga dates back to 2014, shortly after the IPL betting scandal rocked the cricketing world. MS Dhoni approached the Madras High Court seeking ₹100 crore in damages for what he termed "malicious and defamatory" reporting.

After years of procedural delays, the trial has finally gained momentum. In August 2025, the Madras High Court ordered the commencement of the trial and appointed an Advocate Commissioner to record MS Dhoni’s evidence.

The decision to appoint a commissioner—rather than requiring Dhoni to appear in person—was made to avoid logistical and security nightmares. The court recognized that Dhoni is a national figure, and his physical presence in the courtroom would likely lead to massive crowds, potentially disrupting regular court proceedings and creating safety risks.

While IPS officer G. Sampath Kumar had challenged the appointment of an Advocate Commissioner, the court dismissed his objections, questioning how a commissioner-led recording of evidence would cause him any prejudice.

The deposit of ₹10 lakh will facilitate the official translation of the video evidence. Once the transcripts are ready, the Advocate Commissioner will proceed with the recording of statements.
