Lawyer Rajeev Singh Shot Dead in Mirzapur: UP Police Order Probe

In a tragic incident that has sent shockwaves through the legal community, an advocate was shot dead in broad daylight in Uttar Pradesh’s Mirzapur district on April 11, 2026. The victim, identified as Rajeev Singh (approximately 40-50 years old), was a resident of Devari village and was currently living in the Sadbhavna Nagar colony. Singh, who also served as the husband of the local village head (Pradhan Pati), was targeted while returning home from his routine morning walk, marking yet another violent attack on a member of the legal profession in the state.

The attack was captured on local CCTV cameras, providing a chilling visual account of the crime. According to the footage and eyewitness reports, two assailants arrived at the scene on a motorcycle near the Sadbhavna Nagar intersection. One of the men alighted from the bike and fired a shot at Singh's chest using a country-made pistol. Despite a momentary struggle to restart their motorcycle, which allowed a crowd to gather, the gunmen brandished their weapon to keep bystanders at bay before successfully fleeing the scene.

Mirzapur Superintendent of Police (SP) Aparna Rajat Kaushik arrived at the spot to oversee the initial investigation. Preliminary findings suggest that the murder was not a random act of violence but the result of a long-standing personal enmity. The victim and the accused reportedly hail from the same village, and there were ongoing disputes related to village matters and financial transactions involving property. The police have collected forensic evidence and are currently reviewing technical surveillance data to track the escape route of the killers.

The legal fraternity has reacted with outrage, citing the incident as a failure of the law and order machinery to protect advocates. Local Bar members have called for immediate justice, pointing out that Singh was a respected professional and a former village chief. The brutal nature of the execution—carried out in full public view—has heightened concerns regarding the safety of lawyers who often find themselves entangled in local power struggles or property litigations.

Following a written complaint from the victim's family, an FIR has been registered against specifically named individuals. SP Kaushik has constituted five specialized police teams to conduct raids and apprehend the suspects. The police have assured the public and the legal community that the case is being treated with the highest priority and that the accused, who are reportedly already identified through local intelligence, will be arrested shortly to face trial.

This murder adds to a concerning trend of violence against legal practitioners in Uttar Pradesh, reigniting the debate over the implementation of an Advocates Protection Act. As the Mirzapur police continue their manhunt, the local Bar Association is expected to meet to discuss their next course of action, potentially including a strike or protest to demand swifter judicial and administrative safeguards for lawyers across the district.
