Chennai: In a significant judgment that reinforces the accountability of law enforcement agencies, the Madras High Court has upheld an order directing the State government to pay ₹5 lakh in compensation to a victim of police brutality. The court’s decision sends a clear message: the "uniform" does not grant a license to violate the fundamental rights and physical integrity of citizens.

The case dates back to an incident where the victim, G. Manivannan, was subjected to excessive force by police personnel. What began as a routine interaction or a minor confrontation escalated into an act of physical violence that left the victim with lasting injuries.

Following the incident, the victim approached the authorities and subsequently the judiciary, seeking justice for the trauma and physical harm endured. The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) had previously intervened, recognizing the gravity of the violation and recommending a compensation of ₹5 lakh to be paid by the State, with the provision to recover the amount from the salaries of the erring officers.
