New Delhi: In a significant move to modernize the Indian judiciary, the Supreme Court of India on Thursday announced a major suite of administrative reforms centered on Artificial Intelligence (AI). Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant unveiled an AI-powered digital platform designed to track case pendency in real-time, alongside a new integrated payment system and automated security protocols.

Describing the initiatives as “some good news” for the legal fraternity and litigants alike, CJI Kant emphasized that the judiciary is increasingly turning to cutting-edge technology to streamline processes that have historically been bogged down by manual intervention.

The cornerstone of these reforms is a "digital partnership" between the Supreme Court and various High Courts. This initiative will create a unified platform that automatically updates the status of cases across the judicial hierarchy.

"We have launched a digital partnership with various High Courts which will have a platform that will alter the status of cases as per orders from different courts," CJI Kant noted during a court proceeding.

Currently, tracking a case as it moves from a Trial Court to a High Court and eventually to the Supreme Court often involves significant delays in record-making and data entry. The new AI-driven system acts as a live repository. If a Trial Court or High Court passes an order, it will reflect on this unified dashboard, helping the registry and litigants see exactly where a matter stands.

Legal experts suggest that this real-time synchronization will drastically reduce "procedural lag"—the time lost between a judgment being delivered and it being officially recorded in the case management system.

Beyond case management, the Supreme Court is addressing the day-to-day administrative hurdles faced by lawyers and the public. The Court has launched an Integrated Online Payment System (IOPS).

This system will simplify financial transactions for several essential services, including:

Advocate-on-Record (AoR) Examination Fees: Streamlining the registration and examination process for lawyers seeking to practice before the apex court.
Crèche Facilities: Managing payments for the court’s childcare services digitally.

"This will simplify the process by ushering in transparency," CJI Kant stated. By moving away from manual challans and physical payments, the Court aims to eliminate minor delays and provide a clear audit trail for all administrative charges.

The push for digitization also extends to the physical security and logistics of the Supreme Court complex. A new automated system called PARKS (Park Authorisation Record-Keeping System) has been launched to manage vehicle permits.

The automation of vehicle permissions and park authorizations is part of a larger effort to modernize the Registry’s operations. For lawyers who visit the court daily, this means faster processing of entry permits and a more organized parking ecosystem, all managed through digital records rather than paper slips.

These announcements are not isolated events but part of a structured roadmap laid out by CJI Surya Kant since he took office in November 2025.

In December 2025, the CJI reconstituted the Supreme Court’s Artificial Intelligence Committee, appointing Justice PS Narasimha as its chairman. The committee’s mandate is to guide the ethical and practical adoption of AI tools across the entire judicial system.

The committee is currently focusing on four key areas:

Case Management: Using AI to predict case flow and identify bottlenecks.
Scheduling: Automating the cause list to reduce unpredictability for lawyers.
Documentation: Improving the digital archiving and retrieval of case files.
Accessibility: Enhancing tools like SUVAS (Supreme Court Vidhik Anuvaad Software) to translate judgments into regional languages.

The CJI’s approach to AI is one of "cautious optimism." Speaking recently at a legal conference in Goa, CJI Kant remarked that while technology is essential, it must remain a "servant" to justice.

"Technology promises efficiency but also introduces a new type of power and new risk to fairness," the CJI had cautioned. He maintained that while AI can assist in research and administrative tasks, it can never replace the human element of judicial judgment or the sensitivity required to handle human suffering.

For the average citizen, these reforms mean a more predictable legal journey. Case pendency in India is a massive challenge, with millions of cases stuck in various stages of litigation. By using AI to identify repetitive cases, flag stayed matters, and automate routine administrative tasks, the Supreme Court is freeing up its human resources to focus on the actual delivery of justice.

The "administrative milestone" announced by CJI Surya Kant signals a shift toward a more professional, corporate-style management of the judiciary—one where transparency is the default and technology is the primary driver of efficiency.

As the Supreme Court moves toward "Digital Courts 2.1," the legal community expects these reforms to set a benchmark for High Courts and District Courts across the country, eventually creating a truly paperless and efficient Indian judiciary.
