The Supreme Court has ordered local bodies to inform bulk waste generators that failure to segregate, store and hand over solid waste will result in temporary disconnection of water and electricity supply, with restoration contingent on submission of a compliance certificate.

The Supreme Court on August 18 issued directions in the matter of Bhopal Municipal Corporation v. Dr Subhash C Pandey and Others, mandating that local bodies communicate in writing to every bulk waste generator within their jurisdiction the obligations under the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016, and the consequences of non-compliance.
