The coordinated crackdown against illegal drug trafficking in the northeast achieved a significant breakthrough with a multi-crore contraband seizure. In a late-night highway operation, law enforcement officials intercepted a massive consignment of banned cough syrup valued at approximately Rs 2 crore. The successful raid took place during a routine checking operation along National Highway 27, dealing a severe blow to interstate smuggling networks that rely on commercial transport routes to ferry illicit substances across state lines.
Acting on specific surveillance patterns, a police team stationed near the Puticherra toll gate under the Barkhola police station jurisdiction flagged down a suspicious six-wheeler transport truck. A meticulous search of the vehicle’s cargo area exposed a massive cache of contraband deliberately concealed within the transport carriage. Officers uncovered a staggering 21,600 bottles of codeine phosphate syrup carefully organized and packed into 144 large cardboard cartons, revealing the highly organized nature of the trafficking operation.
Initial investigations conducted by senior border police officials indicate that the seized contraband was part of a major interstate smuggling ring. The truck was reportedly transporting the massive cargo from West Bengal and was mapping its way across the region to deliver the illegal shipment to Tripura. Codeine-based formulations are heavily restricted and frequently intercepted due to widespread abuse as cheap intoxicants, making them highly profitable assets for black-market syndicates operating across regional borders.
The operation led to the immediate apprehension of the truck driver, identified as a resident of West Tripura district. Authorities detained the driver at the spot for questioning regarding the logistical details of the transport operation, the exact origin points, and the intended receivers of the illicit stock. In addition to the massive wave of medicine bottles, law enforcement personnel confiscated two mobile phones found in the driver's possession, which are expected to yield critical digital forensic data regarding the network handlers.
